26th August 2010

Planning permission granted to demolish the Canary pub
on the Heartsease Estate. The site will be re-developed
for 'affordable' housing. The pub is expected to close
within a month.

21st August 2010

The licensed restaurant The Hub in King Street has already closed.
It hopes to be able to re-open when better news arrives re
the housing developments near St. Anne's Wharf and,
in particular, the Howard House restoration.

19th August 2010

The former Orgasmic in Queen Street is on the point of
re-opening under the new name of Revolution.
The major changes have been very swiftly made, since 18th July.

I cannot reproduce the backwards-e that seems to be
an important part of the new regime's marketing.

18th August 2010

The Grove in Cadge Road has been boarded-up since July 2009.
An Eastern Evening News report implies that Enterprise Inns
have already sold-off the pub for housing re-development.
Planning permission - if granted - may involve demolition of the pub.

22nd July 2010

The Orgasmic enterprise in Queen Street
was closed by 18th July, and is currently being "gutted".
It seems to be rather more than a re-furbishment.

5th July 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the impending closure of
Squares at Riverside. It is scheduled to close on 25th of this month.

It is a partner to Norwegian Blue which closed in February.
The reasons are thought to be similar.

3rd July 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the closure,
today, of the Spread Eagle in Sussex Street.
The Punch Taverns pub is to be sold later this month,
so its future is uncertain.

The 'building works' at the James the 1st on Drayton Road,
mentioned on 4th May, more closely resemble demolition works.
All that remains of the two cottages, formerly added to
the corner pub, are the gable end and front wall.

26th June 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the imminent re-opening of
the Gibraltar Gardens, in Heigham Street, which was closed in January.
It will re-open on Friday, July 2 after undergoing a £100,000 makeover.

The Mill House in Thorpe St. Andrew (Laundry Lane) is now closed.

21st June 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the re-opening
and change of name of the "little" Woolpack, in
Muspole Street, which 'officially' became
The Woolie - at the weekend.

This is yet another Indulge Ltd. venture.

12th June 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the re-opening
and change of name of the Rose Valley which
'officially' becomes The Mulberry today.

22nd May 2010

The short-lived Noir Bar, in Queen Street, has been
re-opened under the knowhere name. See 1st May.

The Plough, St. Benedict's Street, now tied to Grain Brewery,
re-opened in the middle of this month. See 15th April

The Bridge House (Rosary Road) suddenly closed at the beginning of May.

The Cricketers' Rest, Queen's Road, has not re-opened - as suggested
on 18th March - and, in fact, has recently been boarded-up.

The freehold of Mike's, formerly the
Ironmongers' Arms, is up for sale.
It has been closed since September 2009.

1st May 2010

The Noir Bar, in Queen Street, closed during March;
the 8 a.m. opening being a last desperate ploy.
See 3rd March.
Yet another newcomer - "Knowhere" - is anticipated. Soon??

15th April 2010

The local Press reports that The Plough, in St. Benedict's St.,
has been bought by the Grain Brewery. This brewery is
near Harleston and has brewed since August 2006.
The pub will be their first tied outlet.
No date has been given for the refurbishment to end.

18th March 2010

The Cricketers' Rest, on Queen's Road is reported
closed by March; but may re-open shortly.

20th February 2010

The Leopard, Bull Close Road, has apparently re-opened.
Further details awaited.

16th February 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the closure of the
Norwegian Blue on Riverside. The re-opening date will depend
largely on successful repairs to, and re-opening of, the nearby
Hollywood Bowl facility.

9th February 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports on plans involving the
Ferry Boat Inn, King Street. Although most of the site
will be devoted to Youth Hostel purposes, there may be
a (smaller) pub as part of the scheme.
The plans are expected to come to fruition in 2011.

3rd February 2010

The Eastern Evening News reports the re-opening of the
Reindeer, Dereham Road. A new management team has
taken over, after considerable re-furbishment.
See 18th December.

Confirmation is awaited that the Walnut Tree Shades
closed on Sunday 31st January.  [confirmed 8 Feb. 2010]

19th December 2009

The Branford Arms (off Sprowston Road) re-opened on 15th December
with a temporary licensee in charge of the Punch Taverns pub.
The pub had been closed since January.

18th December 2009

The formerly closed Cottage, Silver Road has been purchased by
the excellent Suffolk brewery Mauldon's and re-opened on 10th December.
See 4th October.

The Reindeer, Dereham Road, is reported - yet again -
to be closed and awaiting a new tenant for the Elgood's pub.
See 11th September.

13th December 2009

Yet again the Rosary Tavern, which re-opened on 22nd August,
has been reported as closed. This was in advance of the
Norwich City home fixture on 5th December.
The lease of the pub has been put up for sale.

10th December 2009

The re-named Noir Bar in Queen Street will have its
Grand Re-opening on Saturday 12th. The simplicity of 'Bar',
as distinct from the mystery of 'Noir', may be promising.
Will Norwich customers know that it rhymes?!?

By 25th November, owners of the Blind Pig, in Farmer's Avenue,
had taken back possession of the closed pub.

26th November 2009

The November issue of the Thorpe St. Andrew Newsletter
mentions the (welcome?) takeover of the Buck on Thorpe Green.
It also highlights the burgeoning "empire" of pubs owned
and/or controlled by Sarah Jane Roberts : See separate note.

10th November 2009

The Eastern Evening News reported some time ago that the
Romany pub had been sold by Enterprise Inns for £350,000.
The new owners have now applied to demolish the toilet block
and garage; to be replaced by a single-storey retail store.
The pub building itself remains, as does the possibility of its
re-opening in the future. It has been closed for just over a year.

4th October 2009

CAMRA's Norfolk Nips has confirmed two more
pubs which have closed by September 2009, namely -
The Cottage, Silver Road; and
The Merchants of Colegate restaurant.

Rumour has it that the Queen Charlotte will be re-opening
under its old name - Lord Nelson - after closing possibly
as long ago as May 2009, after losing its music licence.
